EMCL:
European Masters Program in
Computational Logic
The Annual “IBM & KRDB” Best Thesis Awards
Presented by the IBM Center for Advanced Studies
The KRDB Research Centre (“Knowledge Representation meets Databases”), at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano in Italy, invites entries for the annual “IBM & KRDB” awards for the best thesis on a Computational Logic related topic and for the best thesis on a Language and Communication Technologies related topic, which is generously presented by the IBM Center for Advanced Studies.
This is one of the many success stories set up by Dr. Raffaella Bernardi and Prof. Enrico Franconi, directors of the European Master on Language and Communication Technologies and of the European Master on Computational Logic.
Students who have completed a thesis at the Free University of Bozen- Bolzano on a relevant theme in the two above areas within the past two years are invited to submit their work as specified below for consideration. Theses may be submitted prior to the degree defense and will be judged by a joint panel of academic and industry experts.
Dr. Guido Vetere, Manager and Research Coordinator of the IBM Center for Advanced Studies in Rome, Italy, said: “IBM is delighted to present these worthwhile awards. As an industry we should encourage new thinking and the Best Thesis Awards are an excellent example of encouraging change and rigorous analysis supporting the future technologies that will give competitive advantage to our industry. As a world leader in IT business, Research and Development is core to our business. Innovation is a key value in our world today. IBM is proud to be the initiator of these IBM & KRDB Awards.”
Prof. Enrico Franconi, director of the European Masters programme in Computational Logic organised by the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano said: “As our systems become smarter every day and as the major organisations struggle for the maximum market share, present computer scientists are forced to understand the key issues even faster while making advanced sophistication look a triviality. Computational Logic and Language Technologies are the best paradigms to address problems in hardware and software design that are too complex to be solved by plain heuristics and rules of thumb. It is no longer the case that hardware can survive without a good software and vice versa: Computational Logic and Language and Communication Technologies play a crucial role in understanding key foundational problems in software. Research is the lifeblood of the industry and the IBM & KRDB Best Thesis Awards encourage researchers to address the concrete issues faced by the industry in order to sustain development of these key areas.”
Scope
Possible and not exclusive areas of the thesis might include:
- in the Computational Logic area:
- Logic
- Knowledge Representation and Reasoning
- Search
- Declarative Programming
- in the Language and Communication Technologies area:
- Linguistics
- Text and Speech technologies
- Syntax, Morphology
- Semantics, Pragmatics and Discourse
